Ingredients
Sourdough bread, cubed
Butter, melted
Parmesan cheese, grated
Salt
Pepper
Garlic powder (see notes for fresh garlic instructions)
Instructions
Preheat the oven to 375 degrees.
Put cubed bread in a large mixing bowl. Add Parmesan cheese, salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Toss to combine.
Drizzle melted butter over the seasoned bread cubes. Toss to coat thoroughly. Try a piece of the bread and adjust the seasoning to your liking.
Spread the bread pieces evenly on a parchment lined baking sheet; make sure they aren’t touching each other. If you’re making a larger batch, you may need to use more than one sheet to ensure proper spacing.
Bake for 15 minutes to start with, then check periodically (if necessary) and remove from oven when the croutons are golden.
Allow to cool fully before adding to your salads.
Enjoy + be nourished!
Notes
This recipe takes about 30 minutes to make, with roughly 10 minutes of prep and up to 20 minutes baking.
Store finished croutons in a sealed container for up to a week at room temperature.
I generally just make a couple cups of croutons at a time. For that amount, I use about a quarter cup of grated parmesan and season them to taste.
If you don’t keep garlic powder on hand, you can also add minced fresh garlic to the butter as you melt it and let it cook over low heat for a minute or two.
Store bought croutons are full of additives and are generally not made with any regard for nutrition. By making your own croutons with sourdough bread, you are…
Skipping the additives.
Creating an opportunity for higher nutrient intake, if you use high quality ingredients like grass fed butter and mineral rich natural salt.
Being friendly to your gut, as sourdough’s slow fermentation process makes it easier to digest than modern bread making methods.
